Does your water bill seem to be higher than it should? Or, maybe you have seen an increase in your water bill. A high water bill can be a sign of a water leak in your home or underground water service line.
Here are two simple tests that can help you narrow down the location of a leak.
- Locate the house shut-off valve to your home, this is normally located in the mechanical room where the water heater, furnace, and water softener is kept. Once you have located and turned off the valve you will want to locate the water meter, it is normally located in the front yard. You will want to look at the meter and see if the meter dial is moving. If the meter is not turning that tells you the water leak is most likely somewhere in you home. It may be a leaking toilet, ice maker, faucet, shower valve, or a leak in the pipes that are located in the walls, crawl space, or slab.
- With the water valve turned off, if the meter is still moving, that means the water leak is most likely in the underground service line.
