Chances are if you have a basement or a crawl space, you have a sump pump system.
Sump pumps are used to remove water from a basement or crawl space. With the rainy season upon us, it is very important to keep your basement or crawl space dry and prevent flooding.
It’s good to inspect your sump pump and make sure it’s working before the rainy season arrives. Pouring water into the sump pit should activate the pump if it’s working properly. Your pump should have a check valve to keep water from flowing back and cycling the pump on and off causing it to burn out.
The drain pipe from the pump should discharge outside and away from the foundation of the house. It should be at lease 10’ away on a properly graded area, moving water away from the house. The sump pit capacity should be not less than 18” in diameter and 24” deep. Too small of a sump pit will cause the pump to over cycle on and off, burning out the pump switch.
